Screencast: Help... Paramedic in trouble!

Help... Paramedic in trouble!

Introduction

Hello! My name is Marie-Soleil Davidson. I am currently studying Pre-Hospital Emergency Care at Ahuntsic College. I have been in this program for the last 3 years, and I can't wait to be a paramedic! We take a lot of classes per semester to be able to learn everything in only 3 years, or in my case, four. These classes go from learning to treat traumatic injuries, giving medications or perform CPR for example.
.

The Problem

A problem we often find ourselves in is not being able to communicate with our patient. It can be because you did not practice your English for the last months and are forgetting words, or that your pronunciation is not right. Either way, we have to resolve this problem because communication is one of the most important things in our career. We want to make sure the patient understands what we have been saying, since we usually use a lot of medical terms. A misunderstanding between us and the patient could cause harm, which as healers, we are not supposed to do.The website that I am going to show you can help you, and will make a great partner in your interventions.

The Quest

The first thing you are going to do is open a new tab, and write virtual writing tutor dot com in the address bar. Make sure to write the correct URL, otherwise you might find yourself lost along the pages of the Internet... Anyway. You will arrive at this page, and you can see in the top left corner the logo of the website. In the top right corner, you will find some icons, which you can use to share this beautiful website to your friends. Then, if you scroll down with the scroll bar, you will find some more explanations to the website and what it can be used for. In the upper part of your screen, you will find two different navigation menus; one for the whole website, and one more specifically for the feature we are currently using. The thing we care the most about is in the middle of the screen, which is the text area, which also contains the instructions inside. There is also some icons in the text area, like the ABC one which is used to check spelling, or the microphone, which we will be using today.

The Solution

Now, our problem was our pronunciation, correct? What you are going to do is write the word or the sentences you don't know how to pronounce in the text area. We are going to use for example hemorrhoids. What a nice but complicated word to say! Once it is written in the text area, you have to click on the speakerphone icon. The website will then show you the correct way to say this particular word. You can even check the grammar with the ABC icon if you would like. You can then repeat the word back to your patient, who will probably understand you better. Let's do another one. Convulsions, or seizures (they basically mean the same thing). Write it and hit the icons; there you have it! A simple way to help you in your interventions.

The Conclusion

I do hope you have found this tutorial helpful and will share it with people who might benefice from it.
